Morning Pages, A Wonderful Habit
One of the mind and body techniques I teach in my retreats is called Morning Pages.
Morning pages was created by the artist and author Julia Cameron. She believes that when we wake up and write there is a release of whatever is lingering in our subconscious mind.
Think of it as being the same as waking up and brushing your teeth. Morning pages is just another cleansing technique to get ready for a new day. Once the mind is taken care of we can find more stillness, presence, and inspiration.
Julia teaches to:
- Start writing as soon as you wake up.
- Don’t worry about punctuation or grammar.
- Don’t go back to re-read what you wrote.
- Simply, write from your stream of consciousnesses until you reach three pages.
Morning Pages are three pages of longhand, stream of consciousness writing,
done first thing in the morning. *There is no wrong way to do Morning Pages*–
they are not high art. They are not even “writing.” They are about
anything and everything that crosses your mind– and they are for your eyes
only. Morning Pages provoke, clarify, comfort, cajole, prioritize and
synchronize the day at hand. Do not over-think Morning Pages: just put
three pages of anything on the page...and then do three more pages tomorrow.
This is not a fine art and it’s supposed to be kept private
For me this technique has been wonderful over the years. When I was pregnant, I learned so much about what I was experiencing just by writing things down. I find deeper truth and inspiration once my mind is clean and ready for a new day.
It’s a beautiful process in good and bad times. I find it to be a great tool for this time of technological evolution. Instead of waking up and checking your newsfeed, try writing whatever is on your mind, you may not feel any difference on the first day but overtime you’ll understand its magic. Morning Pages has helped write the blogs for this website. I has helped me find clarity and peace. During postpartum, it helped me make sense of the changes taking place. Many of my clients have found peace and inspiration through this practice.
